Palermo

It is a large and characteristic neighborhood of Buenos Aires having geographies and different styles.

It coexist areas Palermo Hollywood, Palermo Soho, Las straws, Palermo Chico and Barrio Parque. The common denominator that brings these areas is undoubtedly green.

Palermo has the largest parks of Buenos Aires, and areas struggling to keep rambling low-rise houses, surrounded by ancient trees. It is a residential neighborhood with densely populated areas, which has been invaded by commercial businesses, in some cases, completely changed the urban landscape.

The endless dining options and areas dedicated to art and design are also a hallmark of this neighborhood.

Culture & History

There are two theories about the origin of the name , the largest Palermo neighborhood of Buenos Aires.

One talks about the fact that the lands that make up the neighborhood have been owned during the seventeenth century by Juan Domínguez Palermo. The other argues that in these lands was a chapel dedicated to Saint Benedict of Palermo and from there have taken his name current neighborhood .

Palermo is often subdivided into unofficial neighborhoods like Palermo Viejo. Palermo Viejo name arises from the small number of old buildings that are in that part of the neighborhood and the relatively low concentration of buildings more than five or six stories , with few exceptions .

It is a neighborhood characterized by calls sausage house, buildings in a single plant with a common access aisle hosting several housing units from the front of the property to the heart of the "apple " .

In 1836 Juan Manuel de Rosas, to the governor of Buenos Aires Province , whose capital was Buenos Aires seasoning until sufederalización in 1880 - acquired the land that is now part of Palermo . Defeated Rosas at the Battle of Caseros by Justo José de Urquiza, on February 3, 1852 , began the period of national unification with Urquiza as provisional first president after the swearing in of the 1853 Constitution . Subsequently , the federal government expropriated the land that had belonged to the former governor .

The November 11, 1875 President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento opened the Tres de Febrero Park, now the largest green space in the City of Buenos Aires , on grounds of the former farm of Rosas- the name refers to the date of loss at Caseros .

In the late nineteenth century inaugurated both the Zoo and the Botanical Garden in the City, the latter work landscaper Carlos Thays.

This neighborhood has important monuments and landmarks such as the City Zoo , the Botanical Garden , the memorial of the Spaniards, the Argentina Rural Society and Aeroparque Metropolitano Jorge Newbery.

The City Zoo is one of the many traditional weekend trips with family , located next to the Botanical Gardens and the lakes and forests of Palermo. Opened in 1888, covers 18 acres and has a large collection of animal species , many of them native ( like flames , maras and capybaras ). With its Victorian pavilions , declared a National Historic Landmark, is one of the few zoos that time still preserved in the world.

When the Zoo of Buenos Aires was built, it was decided that the buildings where animals would live should reflect the architecture of each species country of origin. Thus, each site that was built was designed with different architectural styles (Chinese , Indian , Moorish and Greco-Roman ) .

The Teatro Sarmiento is the smallest in capacity of the rooms that make up the CTBA . Located in the neighborhood of Palermo, a few meters from Plaza Italia , within the premises of the Garden City Zoo , Avenida Sarmiento 2715, dating from the twentieth century, although there is no precision about the specific date and the original reasons for its inauguration.

The Japanese Garden is one of the most calm and relaxing places of the city, located in the neighborhood of Palermo. It was opened in 1967 on the occasion of the visit of the current Emperor of Japan Akihito and his wife Michiko . All elements of your garden seeking balance and harmony. It has a wide variety of plant species, a lake inhabited by fish carp , an island and several bridges and sculptures related to Japanese culture.
